Have you heard? Apple is releasing another media-mongering device next month. And apparently AT&T has realized that they need to change some things around if they want to make it a lot easier for customers to get to their favorite applications while they’re on the go. It would seem, also, that those reports of the 3G models being the most popular might be right on, if these upgrades to the download limit over 3G are meant to make us think along these lines. It’s definitely a good move for Apple and customers, but what about AT&T and their network?
All of these new issues seem to touch briefly, if not in some cases very heavily, on past information, so we can’t really get away from this stuff right now. In this case, while it’s great news that we can now download 20MB worth of data over the 3G network without a problem, maybe it’s not so great for AT&T’s network. We say that whole “without a problem” thing with a grain of salt, due to the fact that Apple and AT&T have been plagued by bad press regarding the network in which the iPhone currently runs. And now, we are welcoming the iPad with warm, outstretched, loving arms, all the while knowing that it’s going to be on the AT&T network as well. Without a contract. So anyone can join at any time.
Should we be worried? Probably not. Truth be told, if AT&T has made the provisions for this to happen, then it would be within reason to think that they have begun to strengthen their network as well. It’d be pretty pointless to give subscribers the ability to do it, but then not have the network infrastructure to back it up. As consumers, we want more than lofty words and promises: we want results. Of course, for iPad users, this news is great. It means we’re going to be able to download all those new, flashy iPad apps while we’re away from a WiFi connection. And that makes us happy.
