We all knew it was coming, but it’s good to get confirmation. According to The Los Angeles Times, Hulu is planning to release Hulu Plus; a subscription-based service that allows customers to access the depths of Hulu’s available content, for access to past shows. And, while that’s great for Hulu, it seems that the company is a bit worried about another video streaming service already available for the iPad.

Hulu Plus isn’t going to be available on the iPad until later in the year, but it’s going to launch on May 24th for its normal market: the PC. But, Hulu does have plans to bring the service to an application available on the iPad. But, according to MediaMemo’s Peter Kafka, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar tried to get in touch with ABC in hopes to convince them not to make their ABC iPad application free. Obviously, free ABC shows don’t make it easy for Hulu to ask people to pay for them.

Considering how successful the ABC app has been for ABC and the iPad, there’s no wonder that Hulu executives would be dismayed by the fact that they’ve already been undermined even before they can get out the gate, and it will be interesting to see what they do here in the coming weeks.

  1. Netflix is another good iPad app. The app is free and the cost is $8.99 for a subscription and you get the normal by mail movies plus you can stream movies to your iPad for instant watching.
  2. If i was going to pay for anything (which I'm not) I would get netflix over hulu any day
  3. Do either of these (Hulu or Netflix) store movies/videos on the iPad itself or do they just stream OTA. Wondering if it's possible to watch movies where wifi and 3g is not available (like on an airplane)

If they store on the iPad, I'd like to know how much space the average movie requires.
  4. The average movie takes up anywhere between 350MB and 1GB of data, while an HD movie takes up anywhere between 1.2GB and 3.4GB. But, to answer your direct question, no, neither of these options are going to have a cache ability, where the movies will save to your iPad for later viewing. You'll need a constant connection to a network, whether of WiFi or 3G. Though, offline viewing would be an awesome feature.
