iWork limitations stripping data from documents
iWork on the iPad – the collection of Pages, Keynote and Numbers – is Apple’s attempt to make the new tablet more than just a web-browsing, media playing device, but some users are finding it’s more of a headache than a help. Â The problem lies in how iWork handles elements in existing documents that it doesn’t natively support; rather than leave them unchanged, it actually strips them from the final file.
That means, if – for example – you have footnotes or endnotes in a Pages document, or 3D charts, these won’t be preserved in your final document file. Â Grouped objects in Pages or Keynote are ungrouped, and any changes in the document are accepted and comments discarded. Â The fact that not all elements are maintained is flagged up in a warning when you finally save the document, but that warning doesn’t make explicit exactly what will be lost in the process.
Meanwhile the iWork pages on Apple’s site make no mention of the limitations, and in fact bill one of the benefits of the suite as its flexibility to open pre-created documents and then go on to share them with other users. Â While it’s normal for mobile versions of Office applications to lack the full functionality of their desktop counterparts, it’s undoubtedly frustrating to find that, in the process of editing a file, you’ve then lost a chunk of it along the way.
