For anyone out there who really wanted a camera on the iPad, it looks like Apple may have thought the same way you did, but changed their mind at the last moment. Images have begun to make their way around the Internet, that seem to showcase that, indeed, a camera could have fit nicely right in the bezel. If these images are indeed true, they even go as far to show a physical camera, fitting the description of the available space.

We’ve got a pretty good conversation started in our forums, regarding the usage of a camera in a tablet. From the looks of it, the picture is showing us what a camera on the backside of the iPad would have looked like. One of the gripes regarding Apple’s tablet from people is the lack of any kind of camera, but perhaps a camera on the backside would not have been the most practical. After all, holding up the 9.7-inch device to your face, to get a snapshot of your loved one doing something funny in a public place, might make you look slightly ridiculous.

The images are coming from Mission Repair, and they’ve apparently acquired the components through “back channels.” There’s all sorts of different things this picture could be, so right now we’ll have to accept them as an iPad camera that could have been. What do you think? If this is indeed a back-facing camera, would the iPad be your perfect product? Or would it make more sense for the camera to be on the front, to take advantage of those video calls everyone really wants to do? As our conversation over in the forums suggests, we might have to wait for the iPad 2.0. Or, perhaps a larger, 15-inch version.

  1. I think we Americans stopped caring about the british monarchy since 1776 ts to avi iPad and Toys R Us isn't a bad thing. It can be a valuable tool for helping kids learn. Heck they've been putting them to use at elementary schools. Now do I like kids playing with an iPad rather than real toys, No. But it just depends on the user and the need. I'm sure a parent will need to handle with care before throwing an iPad in a kids playpen or something.
