Steve Jobs Handles PR in His Own Way
On Wednesday, we told you that international shipments for the iPad were going to be delayed for a month. There was verbiage in there that would probably upset any European future customer, but apparently Steve Jobs wants to make sure everyone understands that, despite popular belief, that he and his company are doing everything humanly possible to get the iPad out overseas as quickly as possible. He even went as far as to ask someone if they were nuts. Seriously.

For one customer in particular, this delay was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Paul Shadwell decided that he couldn’t take it anymore, and decided to email Steve Jobs proper, and tell him everything the co-founder of the Cupertino-based company was doing wrong. For instance, Jobs was wrong for blocking international pricing for the iPad, along with many other details, while he had to sit there and watch Americans “prance around” with their new tablets. He also blamed Jobs for lying, just one week ago at the iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling, that the iPad’s international launch was still on track.
Here’s what Jobs had to say: “Are you nuts? We are doing the best we can. We need enough units to have a responsible and great launch.”
Now, if Jobs had just asked this guy if he was nuts, and then said they are waiting to have “a great launch,” we could understand where some people would be upset. But, Jobs is right. It’s his company’s duty to make sure that there are enough units to make a responsible launch. They need to make their customers happy with being able to give them the product, even if that means they’ve got to wait for a little while longer.
